Frequently Asked Questions

When will I get my cuttings?

Willow is harvested when the leaves drop and it is dormant, usually in December. You will be asked at checkout when you would like your cuttings shipped, between early January and early March.

What are some ways that I can use willow?

Willow is extremely versatile, and has been used in everyday life for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Willow can be woven into baskets, garden structures, (such as trellises, obelisks, and flower cages), coffins, birdhouses, wreaths, fences, gates, walls, chairs, pet beds, trunks, hampers, light shades, animal figures, and many, many other things. We have even seen a willow car! It can be planted to form living fedges (living fence/hedges) huts, playhouses, and pergolas. Willow may be woven freshly cut (green) or dried and stored, and then soaked. An absolute beginner can successfully weave a wreath, peony crown, or garden obelisk!

Willow stems are beautiful in floral arrangements and are often grown by flower farmers. Red, green, brown, and yellow curly willow add interest to creations, and can also be used for sustainable mechanics in floral design. The velvety catkins of pussy willows are especially prized in spring bouquets and wreaths, and the glossy red bud covers on Winter Glory often arrive in time for Christmas decorating!

What is a bundle?

A bundle is 6 cuttings that are 12”-14” long, with no leaves and no roots.

How are cuttings planted?

Cuttings are very easy to plant! Just insert them into soft, wet earth and keep them well-watered for the first few months. Willows love water, and this is the most important factor in helping them survive and thrive.

How is shipping calculated?

Shipping is a flat rate of $6 plus $2/bundle. This usually works out pretty accurately, but if you have an especially large order and there are shipping overages, you will be refunded the excess, or you may contact us for a shipping quote.

Will willow grow in my zone?

Willow is easy to plant and grow, and typically thrives in zones 4-9, but please do your research or contact us with questions.

Is Willamette Willows organic?

While we are not officially organic, no pesticides have ever been used in or near our willow beds!

Is willow sustainable?

Willow is a very sustainable, environmentally-friendly product! Once established, a plant may produce for 30-40 years, and provide a durable, yet compostable, plastic alternative. Research is also being done on willow for bio-fuel and other environmental protections. Join us in our effort to promote willow growing in the USA!

What if I don’t have space for multiple bundles?

If you want several varieties, but don’t feel you have the space, it is fine to plant two cuttings per hole. This will just produce a fuller plant, faster. We are looking into variety packs, but they are not currently available.
